A Serious Man

Well this weekend I linked up to the local Jozi WUG (Wireless User Group). Now Google doesn't know absolutely everything I do online :) Take that marketers! Anyway it was a great project. A lot of fun. What a great weekend, WUG, soccer world cup finals and beer!

Are you geek enough to work with Linux?

Let me preface this blog post by telling you straight up.....I am not a developer! However I am the bridge between a development team and organizations who chosen to use open source software.

I find myself in a difficult position. My friends & family definitely see me as a geek, often commenting that it seems as if my Twitter & Facebook are in some other language. But among the open source or Linux crowd, there is a caste system in place which can make one feel like an 'untouchable' if you are not a hacker, or a developer.

Who needs to save a penny & pirate the Humble Indie Bundle???

Mark and I talked about the Humble Indie Bundle in our latest podcast and Mark had posted about his recent download of the bundle.

Hard to believe that 25% of the downloads from the site are actually pirated, because people don't want to pay the 1 cent to obtain the key code, but instead are posting it on sites such as forums, 4chan, etc

Episode 18 is Out

Just a quick blog post to let people know episode 18 is out. There is more info in the show notes. As per usual I opine on the evils of the world and wonder why we can't live together as one happy penguin colony?

Women Who Tech in Open Source

This past October, I blogged about sexism in Open Source and there was mixed reactions to the post.  It was triggered by comments from some influential members of the community.

One of the journalists which I referenced in my post, Bruce Byfield, was a presenter on the topic recently at Cossfest 2010 here in Calgary.  I approached him regarding an interview for the podcast and he welcomed the opportunity to share his perspective.

The Calamari Project - A Squid Log Analyser/Data Mining Application

Well some of you may be wondering why there has been a month or more delay in getting the latest episode (17) of OTE out. It is totally my fault that it has taken this long as I got side tracked in a "side" project I started.

Project Calamari ,a front-end to squid log files, currently in beta, is the result of a month or so of effort. It is essentially designed to allow the user to easily interrogate squid access log files by starting at an aggregate level and drilling-down into the detailed log records.

Mark Shuttleworth's keynote regarding upcoming developments with 10.10 Maverick Meercat

Interesting to hear the direction that Ubuntu is heading with 10.10 Maverick.  The focus seems to be on the notebook uptake, with a proposed dual boot option for OEM's using a stripped down version, Ubuntu Light.

Introduces Unity which is built to optimize desktop real estate on netbooks

End users can choose the Ubuntu option when they want fast access to the net for example.

Mark gives a good overview of the changes to expect ahead.  If you work with Ubuntu, you may want to take some time and watch this

The Humble Indie Bundle Experiment

Some independent game companies got together to try and experiment with selling a DRM free, game bundle direct to the public with the need for a middle man. The humble indie bundle is an awesome social experiment in new ways of distributing games and self-regulation. As part of the experiment they allow consumers to pay as much as they want, and in addition to select how the money is to be distributed.
